After deciding we want to create some packaging that will contain three sections, one for the each bottle, and one for the chain, i set about creating and quick mock up of how this may look
When coming up with a packaging idea, we initially thought of creating a variation on an egg box, but then we thought, why does it need to open and close with a lid? the product could simply slide in and out of the package, snugly put inside so it will not break. We researched into some existing products that we could create something similar to. After creating a mock- up in photoshop of two water bottles inside an egg box we decided that perhaps this idea was not the best use of space for transporting our bottles. We spend so long refining details for the bike and how that would be packaged it would be a shame to create a less thought out final product to hold the chain and the bottles. I started researching into the idea of creating it the packaging out of a biodegradable material. I came across saw dust and cardboard that you let pets, hamster and rabbits sleep in for warmth. this material is biodegradable and takes approximately 4weeks to full biodegrade.
After doing a bit of research, i discovered that egg cardboard packaging is in fact biodegradable! this was a win win situation as it was the material we felt best suited the product packaging from the start! After creating the water bottles, we thought about how we would be able to package these along with the bike chain. This product would have to be packaged separately as it would not fit in the flat pack bike wooden sheet. After initially coming up with the Egg box idea, made out of cardboard pulp, we thought about how we could go about visualising this. Firstly we bought a 10pack egg box and removed the eggs. After this we photographed a standard 500ml water bottle in the egg box to get an idea of what sized bottles would fit, and what size we would need our egg box to be. Another thing we had to think about was accommodating the chain into the box also. Egg boxes traditionally come with sections in the middle of the eggs which stick up, almost yogurt pot shapes, We are thinking that we could perhaps wrap the chain around this, to keep the design simple and still protect each part, i.e. the bottles and the chain. These are the initial photographs to show how our idea might look once the product is opened. The logos and contents information would be embossed onto the top of the pack, again so not to use inks or plastics, which most of the time cannot be recycled. Quick mock up of Water box containerAbove is our first mock up of our water bottle container, quickly created on photoshop. One thing i have noticed with this design, is we would have to completely vacuum form the egg box shape to make it fit around the bottes and the chain included within it.
After putting all the elements together, and adding a slight shadow to the bike, to give it a more realistic feel. The bike and the Flat pack part are all finished. Now we just need to create the packaging together for the water bottles and the bike chain. At the moment we are thinking of crafting it out of an egg box, or similar material. The cardboard pulb gives it a natural feel and is also highly recyclable, Following again Quorns, tagline 'better for you, better for the planet.' The two water bottles will be in the place of 5 eggs, one water bottle each side, and the box injection moulded around the bottles, to hold them securely in place.
After creating the instructions in a style similar to Ikeas flat pack picture instructions, we decided that we wouldn't need to include words as then people in all languages would be able to understand how to assemble the bike. Above are the final instructions for the bike assembly. These would be engraved/ branded onto the bike, to save on printing and to prevent the use of plastics or inks, many of which cannot be recycled. We created how the Instructions would look, so they can be transferred onto the bike image, using photoshop. How the instructions will look, engraved onto the flat pack bike packaging (above). This is how the Quorn logo will look once it has been engraved onto the bike. We created a similar version of this earlier in the project, but since then have changed the type of wood we wanted to use; a lighter in colour and weight, a pine wood. Finalising the logo. We decided to create a new logo, because the Quorn Klen bike is a separate sub brand from Quorn, so does not need to have a logo that looks exactly the same. The new Klen logo uses a water droplet with a slight gradient to show how the dirty, darker water changes into the clean, sky blue colour, representing the clean water. We also needed to create a black logo which will make it easier to transfer onto the branded wood. The typeface, is Helvetica light, due to the fact we wanted one thats simple, and clean, again representing the ethos of the Klen bike. Below is how the logo will look on the bike wood, once it has been engraved, by a template and a machine.
After re-searching online we have come up with the idea of using a wooden water bottle with a built in filter at the bottom, and also including a wooden holder for the bottles.
After much experimentation we have decided to produce a 2D version of the bike and the flat pack feature that it comes in. We need to include the branding a little more realistically and the instructions for how to put the bike together.
